The international intelligence agencies had been warning the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili not to succumb to Russian provocation.<\/p>\n<p>In the north of the country, there are two breakaway regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and Russia was using these to escalate the potential conflict, sending in troops under the pretext of providing assistance, and shooting down an unmanned drone on April 21, 2008<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_929_1('footnote_plugin_reference_929_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_929_1('footnote_plugin_reference_929_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_929_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_929_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/13\/world\/europe\/2008-georgia-russia-conflict\/index.html\">2008 Georgia Russia Conflict Fast Facts<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_929_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_929_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>.<\/p>\n<p>On August 7, 2008\u00a0Saakashvili sent troops into South Ossetia, and Russia responded, invading Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>There were two Boer wars in South Africa. In the first in the early 1880s, the Boers had defeated the British<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_929_1('footnote_plugin_reference_929_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_929_1('footnote_plugin_reference_929_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_929_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_929_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/british\/victorians\/boer_wars_01.shtml\">The Boer Wars<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_929_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_929_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>, as the Americans had one hundred years before.<\/p>\n<p>This rankled with the British public, and Joseph Chamberlain, Britain&#8217;s Colonial Secretary escalated this public tension to overcome resistance in the cabinet to his tactical provocation of a second war against the Boers. So the British sent in more troops, until they had raised the Union Jack over Pretoria, the capital of the Transvaal.<\/p>\n<p>But the war was not over. The Boers targeted the trains carrying supplies and troops.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The British, under Lord Kitchener, burned the farms, and put the women and children in concentration camps. There was a deliberate policy of starving the Boer women and children.
